July 17 NYWSE Event: From the Department of State to the department of high-impact entrepreneurs

Elmira Bayrasli will share her own story about focusing on foreign policy, her time at the State Department, living and working in Bosnia, and finally coming to the realization that if she wanted to bring about true change, it would have to be through economic development.  In discussing Endeavor’s model as an innovative way to create jobs and inspire people to be entrepreneurs, she will highlight several female entrepreneurs in Brazil, Egypt, South Africa, and Colombia.

Elmira Bayrasli is the Director of Partnerships, Policy & Outreach at Endeavor, a New York-based nonprofit supporting high-impact entrepreneurship in emerging markets.  Before joining Endeavor, Elmira was the Chief Spokesperson and Director of Press and Public Information at the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo.  In 1994, she joined the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, working for then Ambassador Madeleine K. Albright.  From 1997-2000 she was a Presidential Appointee at the Department of State, in the Secretary of State’s office.  She also served on the negotiating team in the Office of the Special Cyprus Co-ordinator.  Elmira received her MA in Middle Eastern Languages & Literature from Columbia University and her BA in Political Science from New York University.  She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has contributed to several books and publications, including several book reviews and op-eds.
