June 26 NYWSE Event: Can Writers be Social Entrepreneurs? Can Social Entrepreneurs be Activists?
In October, 2000, a book Amy and Jennifer co-wrote about the state of the women's movement, called Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and the Future , was published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux. That book served as the platform for a national speaking tour which brought the two to literally dozens of community groups, countless bookstores, and more than 200 universities and high schools. Their own speaking tour, and experiences with an agent, prompted the two to found Soapbox Inc. Speakers Who Speak Out (check out the website).
Amy and Jennifer have worked together on various projects since they met in 1993 as 22-year-olds at Ms. magazine. Jennifer was an intern at Ms. and Amy worked down the hall in Gloria Steinem's office.
Amy is the co-founder of the Third Wave Foundation, the voice
behind Ask Amy (an online advice column at Feminist.com), the project
director of Anna Deveare Smith's Twilight Los Angeles, and the author
of Opting In: Having a Child Without Losing Yourself (FSG 2008).
Jennifer writes for dozens of magazines, including Glamour, The Nation,
Real Simple, and Harper's. She is the creator of the I Had an Abortion
project (both the t-shirt and producer of the 2005 film), the author of
Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics (FSG 2007) and Abortion and Life
(Akashic Books, 2008), and is currently working on a film and t-shirt
project called "I Was Raped."
Joint writings by Amy and Jennifer can be found in The Nation and
several anthologies, including Catching A Wave, Girls Rock!, and the
afterword to Courtney Love's memoir Dirty Blonde. They each live in New
York City with their families, just across the Williamsburg Bridge from
each other.
